NLA is a wonderful, supportive organisation to volunteer with. The team do their absolute best to assist and work with the people living in Kavala camp. Alex, the general manager does an incredible job of managing and getting to know a constantly changing group of volunteers and personalities and it is clear that she puts the safeguarding of volunteers and camp residents as her highest priority and has put many things in place such as codes of conduct, volunteer contracts, volunteer housing, social activities, one to one meetings, teaching sessions etc to achieve this. I was given lots of opportunity to contribute to NLA in my own way and felt that all the volunteers were encouraged to bring their unique skills to the organisation. There’s lots of opportunity to socialise with other volunteers if you want to which was a part of my experience I really enjoyed. So many of the lovely people I volunteered with still volunteer for the organisation remotely or have returned on multiple occasions. Everyone really believes in the work we are doing and are doing their best to positively impact the lives of the people living in Kavala camp.

NLA works in support of 1,000 refugees and others in need in Kavala. It offers vital operations including clothing, baby and educational support - managed by a team of wonderful volunteers. The volunteers come from all over the world, including many currently living the camp. NLA has many great partnerships with other humanitarian actors in the area, as well as local authorities. I feel very lucky to be part of this professional and compassionate organisation and could not recommend it any more.

NLA is an integral part of the Kavala community and does incredible work with refugees and asylum seekers in the area. They have built themselves up through dedication and hard work to offer a range of vital services that make a tangible difference to people's lives. Could not recommend it enough !

Although my time there was short, my experience over in Kavala with the whole NLA team was amazing! Alex and the whole team of volunteers were so welcoming and it was clear that they really care about making a difference and helping those living in Kavala camp as much as possible. I really recommend anyone who would like to get involved, to do so!

I volunteered with Northern Lights Aid for 6 months as teaching coordinator and it was one of the most eye opening and engaging 6 months of my life. NLA works tirelessly to serve the community they work with, both the families living in Perigiali Camp and vulnerable members of the local Greek community. The dedication, warmth, and resilience of all the people I worked alongside still inspire me to this day. NLA is truly one of the most incredible organisations made so by the many fantastic people that walk through its doors every day!

What should have been a great opportunity to get things done and help improve the lives of refugees turned out to be anything but. Volunteering alongside women of all ages and experience levels, it was very disorganized and lacked structure. The girls were frankly catty and constantly challenging each other to be the "boss". There was constant gossip and talking behind others backs. Childish things that I wouldn't expect from an NGO who's focus is helping refugees. A local volunteer, who was a masseur, also offered free massages which many volunteers gratefully accepted. I was disgusted to hear the main volunteer, Alex, ask if I had inappropriate relations with the masseur... That apparently the other girls discussed. Isn't that something you'd ask me while I was volunteering, instead of the minute before I leave? Why me and not the other girls who received massages? He was incredibly kind and professional, unlike the NGO. Later on I tried to send a box of donations that was turned away, and Alex stopped responding to my messages. I'd recommend finding a real NGO that's actually interested in helping refugees, not working with these unfortunate women.
