A stunning Byzantine monastery that has been restored and can be visited for only 2euros per person. It is worth exploring the surrounding forest too
It was built in the 10th/11th centuries. The surrounding area is very green and beautiful. It isn't too far away from the center of Athens but you need a car to visit it. There are a few buildings except the church, like the bath house etc. The frescoes in the church are amazing and some of them were made in 14th century. Highly recommended.

Quiet and beautiful monastery in a nice area for walking and enjoying the view on Athens. Compared to the bustling acropolis this is heaven. You're free to walk into the different buildings, the kitchen, the eating quarters, the sleeping cells and the nicely decorated little church. You can park on the adjacent road or a little bit further on a parking area. Admission is 2.
