The Monastery of Panagia Boura was founded in the 11th or 12th century and is used today as a nunnery. Celebrations take place, on its anniversary, on the 23rd of August. Apart from being a significant religious centre of Arcadia and of the whole of the Peloponnese, this monastery played a significant part in the War of Independence against the Ottoman empire: it was a school for the enslaved Greek children, an induction centre for the Filiki Eteria (the "Society of Friends", was a secret 19th century organization, whose purpose was to overthrow Ottoman rule over Greece and to establish an independent Greek state) and a safe haven for those under pursuit. It is still very much an active monastery and in 1984 new nuns were introduced, as well as newly constructed buildings were completed.
