Municipality of Rhodes represents the Greek island of Rhodes, situated in the South Aegean Region.The island of Rhodes is 79.7 km long and 38 km wide, with a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometres and a coastline of approximately 220 km. The city of Rhodes is situated in the north-east tip of the island. The actual population is about 10000. The island was inhabited in the Neolithic period. In the 8th century BC the island's settlements started to form, with the 3 important cities of Lindos, Ialyssos and Kameiros. In Pindar's ode, the island was said to be born of the union of Helios the sun god and the nymph Rhode, and the cities were named for their three sons. Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Knights of St. John, is one of the best preserved Medieval Cities in Europe, which in 1988 was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City of Rhodes is a popular international tourist destination. Rhodes’s development strategy is primarily based on the promotion of the sustainable development in the area. For this purpose, the municipality is actively engaged in the HABITAT Agenda as well as Local Agenda 21. Rhodes municipality has participated in a number of projects within the framework of Community programmes and initiatives.
