The Samos Island Catholic Church, located along the Sofouli waterfront promenade, is a charming church in Samos-Vathy (Σάμος-Βαθύ), the capital of Samos Island. The rite is Roman Catholic, in contrast to the prevailing Greek Orthodox faith of the nation, and serves the 200 or so Catholic parishioners in Samos. The church was built by African mission monks under the supervision of the Bishop of Chios in 1901, and served as a monastery up until 1970. The monks living here were famous for their wine production (as is the island of Samos, in general), which was used for Holy Communion throughout Europe. In 1970, the last monk, a Frenchman named Father Francis Gajo, sold the building to the Tzoutzaki and Zerizian families. As a result, the impressive church façade you see has been converted into shops or else is not in use; what is left of the actual chapel is a small room located through a narrow alley on the left entrance. With the sale of most of the building to the two families, the remainder of the structure, i.e., today’s chapel, was donated to the Diocese of Chios. In 1999, the Archbishop secured more of the building (including the attic, where the priest can sleep and work), so that today around 20% of the building belongs to the church, and the other 80% to the aforementioned families. Holy Mass is celebrated at least twice a month, and every Sunday in August, by various priests.
