Google’s listing currently says ‘temporarily closed’ but it’s definitely open again (as of early September) You can walk through one of the “streets” between houses of the village, which is pretty cool. Definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in historical places, have your own wheels to get around the island, or are already heading to the red beach. If you’re not big on history and aren’t heading out for other sights, probably don’t make a special trip just to cross it off the list...

For people interested in archiology it's a must. Beautiful and well maintained
For my its like a a Greek Pompeii. Just nearly twice as old. Completely indoors so good regardless of the weather. To think even though a huge site its only an estimated 3 per cent of the total site. If you have any interest in history you have to go here. It well worth. Its just down the road from the red beach. So can do both on 1 trip. Buy the triple ticket for here the mueseum in Fira and Thera
Very cool place. Amazing display of artifacts. The day we were there we got free admission which was pretty sweet. Public bus back to town was to full so had to wait for the next one.
We paid this place a visit on the way to the red beach, and we were left fairly disapointed. It was interesting in terms of seeing how 'modern technology' was implemented even back then! But the information you're provided with is very limited (most relates to the floor plans of the houses). At 12 per person we expected there to be an accompanying museum with some of the artifacts that had been discovered in the ruins, but alas that was not the case. I beleive most of the artifacts are located in other museums in Santorini and Athens? Perhaps a guided tour would have been more beneficial.
This is an AWESOME exhibit... We believe it's better than Knossos on Crete.
We loved learning the history of this totally open and active excavation site of Akrotiri. We did get a guide, which helped a lot to understand what we were looking at. Later we saw the spring fresco in the National Archeology Museum in Athens and it was even more special. When we were there, it was fun to see all the active work on the site. There is so much more to learn.
Truly an amazing place and well worth a visit. The local guides are very knowledgeable. This place is under a roof... An amazing feat on its own. Did not know much of the history of this place and was surprised it is older than Pompii but less well known. It is incredible how deep the site goes and how much they have found.
