Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was founded in July 1973 by Legislative Decree no. 87 of July 27, 1973 and began its operation in the academic year 1974 - 1975. It was named Democritus in honor of the ancient Greek natural philosopher Democritus, who came from the Abdera of Thrace.The DUTH and its administration are based in Komotini, which is the capital of the East Macedonia and Thrace District. As a Higher Education Institution, it is a full-fledged Legal Entity of Public Law. It is supervised and sponsored by the State through the Ministry of National Education and Religions.

We came here festival time. A group students organized a party and that night we just enjoyed with them. Students have a lot of rights in there. We made a beautiful party. We love it.

Το Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης (Δ.Π.Θ.) ιδρύθηκε τον Ιούλιο του 1973 με το Νομοθετικό Διάταγμα υπ' αριθ. 87 της 27 Ιουλίου 1973, και ξεκίνησε την λειτουργία του το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 1974-1975. Ονομάστηκε "Δημοκρίτειο" προς τιμήν του αρχαίου Έλληνα φιλοσόφου Δημόκριτου, ο οποίος καταγόταν από την πόλη Άβδηρα της Θράκης.
