The Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin or Kato Panagia (better known as Kato Panagia) or Vryseos Street as previously mentioned in the sources, is built at the foot of Peranthi hill, about 20 minutes west of Arta, in an idyllic location by the river Arachthos. It was founded in 1250 by the despot of Epirus Michael II Duke and his wife, later Saint, Theodora (March 11). Its foundation coincides with the heyday of the Despotate of Epirus. The name Kato Panagia was given to the monastery to distinguish it in relation to Parigoritissa, which is built on a higher level than the monastery. It is one of the three monasteries that Michael built as a sign of his sincere repentance (as the biographer of Saint Theodora Job, a monk (sixteen centuries) informs us, for the marital infidelity in which he fell with a noble lady, Gangrini, from which in fact had two illegitimate sons The other two monasteries are of Panagia ton Vlacherna, in the homonymous village of the municipality of Vlacherna and Agios Georgios, where the current church of Agia Theodora in the city of Arta. In fact, in the latter, Agia Theodora lived as a nun for the last 10 years of her life until her sleep in 1280, when the monastery was renamed the monastery of Agia Theodora.
