Beautiful Athenian church, with a richly decorated interior.

Great Greek Orthodox Church in a lively area of Athens. It was built between 1847-1850 and it was the first Cathedral of Athens. The building is Neoclassical and integrates Renaissance and Byzantine details. Many historical events took place in this church such as the rite of passage of Otto in 1835 and the funeral of Theodoros Kolokotronis in 1843. The interior is very impressive and the gilded iconostasis was donated by Tsar Nicholas of Russia in 1850. Highly recommended.
