Kavala, Greece
Unnamed Road
N/A
The earliest phase of the fortification is dated in the 4th century BC. The spot was an important station of Via Egnatia guarding a narrow pass through the hills and also surveying a large part of the coast east of Kavala. Therefore Romans, Byzantines and even Ottomans took good care for the protection of this hill as well as of the neighboring hills west of Nea Karvali, closer to Kavala. Most recognizable are the Byzantine modifications (14th century) as well as the extensive fortification works that were carried out during WW I.
