Amazing place and history. One of the most important Byzantine monuments in Athens is in the middle of Ermou street. The church is dedicated to Saint Mary but it is better known as Kapnikarea. It is a complex tetrastyle cross-in-square church that dates back to 1050.

Very cute little old church from 1,000 years ago, right in the middle of a busy intersection! The door was closed when I was there about 3pm on a Tuesday in mid-September 2019.
A lovely old church placed in a small square surrounded by shops. It is like a small sanctuary from the muddling crowd. I would not come here especially but if you are around, it is certainly worth a visit. Go inside, in quiet and absorb the peacefulness and beauty of the place. The back of the church offers good shade in hot summer days.
If you can please take a look at this small church right in the city center.
Beautiful church in the middle of a city street. I love how the city is built around it. People were eating, singing, and painting on its perimeter, like it was a street bench. It’s beautiful architecture is a jolt to the modern pollution around it. The doors were locked so we were unable to go in, but we were able to admire the architecture and art work on the outside.
Just another religious place. This one is a bit packed and ugly cause of the surrounding buildings that press it to look even smaller/stressed than it actually is. There are by far better places in Greece to target for a pilgrimage, the HQ of the Greek orthodox church for example is just 150m down the road.
It's a small church near the city center and in a street. It is closed these days but you can sit around here and can enjoy the hustle bustle of the tourists
Beautiful from outside. I was in short & not allowed in. But women were allowed in skirts... kind of odd. Now I know how women feel. Next time is cooler I'll wear pants.
