Hellenic Center for Intercultural Psychiatric & Care “Kostis Ballas” is a non- profit, organization that was established in 1991 by Kostis Ballas. Kostis Ballas was a Psychiatrist, Associate Professor at the University of Athens and he had an important contribution to the Greek Psychiatric Reform and to the implementation of the Prevention Center of Addiction and Health Education in Greece. His main quest was to defense the most vulnerable group of the Greek society. Thus, since 1991, our Center has been active in the field of the mental health as well as public health, mobile populations and refugees in Greece. Our aim is to educate, train and sensitize social scientists and mobile populations on issues relevant to cultural differentiation, intercultural approach of contemporary social problems, and prevention strategies in order to alleviate social marginalization of socially vulnerable groups of the population. Our purpose is to provide, through our services, psychosocial support to culturally differentiated, socially vulnerable and excluded groups such as Mentally ill people, people positive to HIV, Migrants, Illegal transit populations from the Middle East, Roma, Religious Minorities (Muslims) and Greek Immigrants from former Soviet Union. In order to achieve those aims, the Center operates in areas with high unemployment rates, residential and educational problems, extensive substances abuse (including alcohol) and lack of supportive social services.
