An easy and inexpensive alternative to the cruise ship olympia tour is doing it yourself, via the train. From the cruise port turn north follow the waterfront for a 5 to 10 minute walk to the 'station'. Cost was 10 euro for round trip, took 35 minutes each way

Good train service transporting you from the picturesque Katalolon to Olympia, which is a 15 minute walk from the ancient site of the Olympics. Train was a good price (ticket booth in front), air conditioned and took about 50 minutes for us.

Important to know: the train arrives 10 min prior departure, and the lady selling the tickets comes with the train, and opens the office as she arrives, to sell the tickets, and then she jumps in the train again. So if you see the office closed 15 min before train schedule, don't freak out! It's fine! oh, and the validation of the tickets is done by the controller during the trip, so you don't have to search for any validation machine or whatever. Ah, and the valid schedule for the day is always in a board next to the back door of the office. Now, about the service and timings and cleaning and AC and punctuality, everything absolutely PERFECT definitely the best and most reliable and affordable way to go to Olympia from Katakolo Ps: check the opening times for the museum of ancient Greek technology in Katakolo (the house right in front of the train station) before you go, to know if you will have time to see it before or after your trip to Olympia. This small museum is totally worth visiting!

Great bargain with really nice people. The train does not run many times a day, but it is a good way to get to Olympia and see everything with the flexibility of several return runs throughout the afternoon. 10 for the round trip can't be beat.

We hopped off the cruise ship and went straight for this train to go to Olympia. It's probably the ideal way to get there as the train is very clean and air conditioned. It's also the cheapest way to get there. Make sure to look at the departure and arrival times before you buy your ticket so you can coordinate your return trip.

Use the train to get to Olympia, 10 euros return, all very easy just watch the train timetable for the return journey Ideal if your on the cruise ship, avoiding the tours! Olympia was 12 euros including the museum

Take this train to get to ancient Olympia from Katakolon. For only 10 euros for a way and back trip, duration 45 minutes each. Schedules are not regular and are based on cruise ships arrivals. In our case (MSC Musica) the train departed 20 minutes after ship’s scheduled arrival on port (12:20), took 45 minutes to get to Olympia, stayed there for a couple of hours and departed from Olympia at 15:00. Clean train with air conditioning and also a nice view of the Greek countryside. There is also a stop in Pyrgos, half way between Katakolon and Olympia.
