Well maintained historic site for Crete with far more to see than you might expect due to the presence of birds of prey playing in the thermals above the monastery. There is a nearby bar that offers refreshment and there is a shop to buy icons in the monastery as well. The repairs to the building ard good and a few hours can be passed looking and visiting, making good use of the available shade.
Peaceful, working monastery high in the hills with beautiful views. The church dates back to the 16th century and there are a number of interesting renaissance, Roman and baroque influences. The monastery is fortified with a high wall around it. In 1866, during the Cretan resistance of the Ottomans, 943 locals sought refuge in the monastery. After three days, they exploded barrels of gunpowder, killing themselves rather than surrender. A chapel in an external wall contains some of the skulls.
Beautiful place, away from the hustle and bustle of cities. Perfect for spending a couple of quiet hours.
Calm & beautiful space with some violent history behind it. Must see if you’re interested in Crete history. We visited the monastery on our way from Chania to Elounda. The drive here was a bit intimidating if you’re not used to small winding roads. Going through the monastery took 1 hour. The free brochure at the entrance described a lot of the rooms significance, and there’s a small museum too with more details on the history.
Must see if you go to Crete. One of the main national heritages and absolutely beautiful place!
Beautiful and historic place that is well worth the drive up the mountain. The gardens alone are beautiful but the building and exhibits are interesting and I learned a lot about Greek/Cretan history. Even the drive up and down was fun with great views. It's usually open until 20:00 but closed at 19:00 when we visited so check before leaving if you are going late In the day. There is an admission charge so bring cash or credit.
If you are traveling in the mountain area of Rethymno then this is an amazing place to stop for a while and visti. The Arkadi Monastery is providing you with an amazing architecture going back to 16 century with amazing history during the Cretan Revolution.
