A wonderful experience walking down this gorge. Super well maintained path to follow with bridges to cross the steams of water where needed. Great combination of forest and rocky paths. We advise to really wear good hiking boots protecting your ankles. Bring water bottles and refill them with spring water at each resting station. There's toilets and benches in the shade every few kilometers. Each kilometer is indicated by signs. Bring a towel to dry off after a refreshing swim in the sea once you reached the beach. Showers at the beach to rinse off the salt. Bring comfortable shoes for a stroll through the small village with plenty of nice restaurants for a relaxing break before taking the ferry home. We booked an organized trip (bus, gorge, ferry, bus) which was great.

Absolutely stunning views and the water flowing at the bottom is just super clear and cold. If you go for the whole 18 km hike, then you must bring water bottles and certainly comfortable shoes with you, if possible then actual hiking shoes, since some of the rocks are quite slick. Do keep in mind that unless this kind of hiking is something you do often, your legs will be in some pain the next day. And you might get some sores on your feet. I also recommend bringing a bit of food with you on the hike(energy bars or some other nourishing snacks). The beginning can be quite difficult, but every bit is worth it to be honest, especially for an Estonian such as myself, since there are basically no mountains in Estonia.
Lots of stops for water, only bring one bottle and re fill. You don’t necessarily need walking boots, but the ground you will be covering is mostly rocky. The views are fantastic, and if you set off early enough you should be fine with the heat, we went in August. If you complete the full trail and then walk to the beach afterwards you will do over 30k steps. Well worth it though. Bring a towel and swimwear.
I walked through the about 20 km mostly on top of stones. Bring with you: Good walking shoes, hat, sunlotion, water and a snack in summertime. Lovely nature around you. Don't forget the camera.
A delightful hike with impressive views. Pack a water bottle (spring water stations along the way) and a towel for swimming at the end. Start early in the morning and enjoy lunch on the beach.
Fantastic excursion. We took the 7.45am ATEL bus from Chania and arrived by 9am. After copious picture stops we arrived oh the other side by 1.30pm. Bring good shoes, water and sunscreen. My favourite thing we did in Crete! Please don't attempt unless you're comfortable walking 16km in normal circumstances. It's hot and the terrain doesn't make for easy walking - we saw many unfit people turn have to turn back.
For people who love walking in nature (actually hiking), it is the ideal place to visit. Samaria, the most famous gorge in Crete, is unique. It is the longest gorge in Europe and also a national park of Greece. There you can see many different species of plants, birds and the famous cretan goat "krikri". At the end of it stands the beach of Agia Roumeli which is really nice to swim and enjoy sea and sun of the South Crete. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for hiking and take with you your camera and swimsuit!
Wonderful national park. Ten miles of very rough Track cris crossing a torrent. Distance is not relevant, but the track is very rough: mountain boots essential. Lots of unstable rocks waiting to Turn under tired foot. Even if a 10 mile track is nothing to you this track will stretch you: my point; take your time, and don't do it if your not fit. Would I do it again: yes. Slower!
