The views are breathtaking. The drive along the mountains is sooo amazing. Then you see this small church on the mountains. It’s very beautiful, well maintained and renovated then and there. There was a man at the church shop and he was very nice. He even gave us some lemonade to drink. The history of the church is very interesting. It’s a must visit. We loved this place very much. From this place you can drive through „mesanagros“ as you can see the direction mentioned. It’s worth to take this road although google does not know it. The road is very nice and the views are breathtaking. It’s a must visit place and a must visit drive from this place to mesanagros .

Tucked away, high on a mountain, between Mesanagros and Apolakia, is this amazing Monastery. It is situated in the most tranquil of settings with glorious views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. When we visited we were the only visitors so we enjoyed it at our leisure. Every inch of wall and ceiling is adorned with colourfully painted religious pictures and icons.

In English the name of this place on maps translates as Moni Skiadi or Skiadi Monastery. The small but lovely church also contains what is claimed to be the holiest icon on island of Rhodes, of the Madonna and Child. Photography within the chapel is banned. Most people seem to disrespect that but if you feel that you must be amongst that group then please don’t use flash and at least be discreet about it. Photography within the entrance vestibule is permitted and I’ve always found that’s the best place to get photos of the interior anyway. Beautiful, peaceful, tranquil. Plus plenty of cute cats and also friendly monks offering free mountain tea from outside the small souvenir shop. It’s a great excursion during a hot afternoon as it’s cooler up here and there are refreshing breezes. Lots of picturesque flowers with honey bees, birds and butterflies, so good on that basis alone for photographers. The large car park has a clean public toilet block to the right of the monastery and potable water if you wish to refill your water bottles. Great views of the surrounding countryside and western coast. As with all such sites, dress with respect for local customs, so don’t display acres of bare flesh: cover your legs to at least the knee and make sure that your back, chest and shoulders are covered. There are a few scarves/shawls to borrow at the entrance to the chapel, but they can be a bit funky by the end of the day after being worn by lots of sweaty visitors. Please also show your support by dropping a few Euros in the collection box: these places rely on donations to keep going. I’d suggest a minimum donation of 5; my wife and I usually leave at least 10.
