The University of Thessaly is a public Higher Education Institution of Greece based in Volos. and 18 departments, with university units in Volos, Larissa, Trikala, Karditsa and Lamia. In January 2019, under Law 4589, the TEI of Thessaly and Central Greece abolished and all of the Departments of the former as well as the Departments of Electronic Engineering, IT Engineering, Nursing and Physiotherapy of the latter were incorporated in the University. The University now consists of 8 Schools and a total of 35 Departments. The University of Thessaly is one of the newest academic institutions in the country and has about 14,000 undergraduate students and 3,500 postgraduate and doctoral candidates.

Tο κτίριο καπναποθήκης Παπαστράτου, στο ανατολικό άκρο του λιμανιού του Βόλου, αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς για την πόλη. Kτίστηκε το 1926. Το 1985 αγοράστηκε από το Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, ανακαινίστηκε και σήμερα στεγάζει τη Διοίκηση και Υπηρεσίες του Πανεπιστημίου.
