So the doctors are quite nice and knowledgeable and you will most likely receive decent care. Dare I say better than NHS in the UK? Perhaps. Debatable. But let me be clear. If you can afford private DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER RIO. The problem is the staff and most of all the building. It really feels like a bureaucratic government enterprise with shuffling around from one dept. to another, unknowledgeable staff and admins that can lead to chasing the paperwork tail. Stupid requests for papers that nobody actually asked for and vanishing admins could lead to hours of wasted time. Now the building. I've never gotten so lost walking around zombie corridors looking for a sign or a person to help. Total maze. And a bit rundown but considering the budgets they work with can't complain.

My son was transferred here from Kefalonia where we were on holiday. He had a twisted intestine which needed specialist medical intervention. First appearances - the hospital looked chaotic - but the compassion, care and expertise of the staff was amazing. My son is autistic and they took every care they could to try to find a quiet place for him and they treated him with respect and compassion - seeing the person and not just the autism, which can't always be said of the NHS. Family, not nurses, provide personal care. It is easy to get lost in the hospital if you are not Greek - all signs are in Greek and all the corridors look the same. The restaurant serves fresh food cooked on the premises - with friendly helpful staff - a brief respite from sitting in the ward. They clearly don't have the funding they need but what they do with what they have is humbling and I am very grateful for the dedication of the staff there.

My dad recently spent 6 weeks leaving with a pacemaker and internal defibrillator. All staff from the consultant and his team to nursing, cleaning and catering were friendly and helpful. The quality of the medical care he received was excellent and staff made every effort to ensure that we understood what was happening with dad and keep us involved. Not all staff could speak English but there was always someone around who did. Mum stayed with dad the entire time providing his personal care and support. She hired a chair that laid flat for 3 euros a night and sheasy got her hair cutility and blow dried for 14 euros in the salon in the lobby. Freshly cooked food is available to buy from the restaurant at lunch time and there is a coffee bar selling wraps etc. Shower rooms and toilets on the wards weren't great but the ones near the cafe were better. Remember to take your own pillow case and toilet roll. From the front of the hospital you can see a sign for a pharmacy and coffee shop. Don't be scared to go over there as this leads to a whole street of shops including supermarkets. The nearest hotel is the costello which is within walking distance. Rooms were lovely though they are currently having building work done.

Worst hospital in the world.Medical staff does not respect patients wishes.Young medical staff interns very rude to patients.Hospital bathrooms do not have any toilet paper,no paper towels and no soap in any bathrooms.Medical staff will complain to security and security will come to you and state that you were wrong.Avoid this hospital likethe plague.
