A historic fortress overlooking the sea. It’s probably the most obvious place to visit when you’re in Rethymno.

We visited the fortress in August 2020 The place is large but the beautiful thing is that in summer hot holidays there are many places with shadow where one could rest. The panorama from above is very nice all around! There is an arena where people can sit down and relax for a while. The pine-trees are making this place more attractive and we loved our walk.

A super fortress with a super view over the city and the surrounding water. You should not miss it if you arrive in Rethymno. Lots of stone and very well preserved buildings for their antiquity. There is even a small church where you can pray. The ticket it 4 euros for adults, there is a small bar and a toilet inside.

Quite a nice fortress. For an entrance fee of 4 , you can wander through the entire complex. Most of it are ruins, but there are also nice views of the town of Rethymno. A small leaflet with a map is included in the ticket.

Sprawling fortress on a promontory built by the Venetians in 16th century against pirate and Saracen intrusions, quickly taken over by the Ottomans for 250 years, briefly occupied by Greek villagers then by the Nazis... Remarkable empty mosque and military buildings, hundreds of arrowslits all around, underground galleries, otters with old canons, piles of cannonball, broken slabs with Arabic calligraphy... In the summer, concerts are held in this awe-inspiring and peaceful setting. Better visit in the evening to avoid scorching heat and catch a glorious sunset.

Worth a visit. Surprisingly large fortress overlooking central Rethymno. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century and captured by the Ottomans in the 17th century. Nice views across the town and out to sea.

Really cool attraction to visit in Rethymno. It costs 4 per person or 10 per family. It is worth the money. You can go around and explore as much as you want. The only thing that is missing is boards with information about the different buildings. The little paper you get at the entrance is not enough to explain about the history of the place.
