The fortress was built in the IX century. From the end of the 19th century until 1978 it was used as a prison. The fortress has 7 towers and is a serious fortress structure. The ticket is also valid for another fortress tower, which is located outside the fortress - \The triangular tower

Well worth a visit, especially if you visit the exhibition at the white tower first which is in the town, which further puts the past of castle into context. Castle is impressive with commanding views of Thessaloniki, only part of castle is accessible to the public, including the cell block used more recently for political prisoners. There are also further ruined towers and walls in the surrounding area which truly sdemonstrate how extensive this castle must of been in earlier times.

The place offers an amazing view of Thessaloniki while, at the same time, the visitor is able to have a good insight of the archaeological site by walking across it and visiting the exhibition that is inside. Finally, it is well preserved and maintained.

The fortress has a interesting history that is presented in a small museum, otherwise the area that is accessible is quite small. The view from above is nice but for 6 not worth in my opinion. However if you are under 25 the entrance is free!

Situated near Agora, the old medieval fortress, Eptapyrgion means the Fortress of the Seven Towers, as seen in the mock-up photo. Haven, defense fortress, garrison headquarters, prison until 1989, these were her destinations in the past. Its construction is not precisely dated, differing between the years 300s and the 9th century. What is certain is that it was an important point of the fortifications of the city during the Byzantine period, and above the entrance is recorded the year 1431 as the year when it was captured by the Turks. All the vicissitudes of history have added the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1978. It is allowed to visit inside, but only certain pavilions.

In the highest point of the city this is propably one of the most beautiful and astonishing places to visit.easy to visit with bus etc but with feet is little difficult(all the way is uphill)but not something that can't be done and ot is very good walk for view as you go all the way up to see the city from above.ot was an old prison with a lot of history.constucted by the Ottomans it lasted until 1990.Around the old prison is a big park within the old byzantine walls.a place is full of life all day. A place that you have to visit.Above the old prison is the city's forrest in 5 minutes and below is another park
